Overcome Fear In Your Life by Recognizing God’s Voice

As you live for the Lord, how do you rate your ability in recognizing God’s voice?
Jesus talks about knowing and recognizing His voice in John 10:1-16. “After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice” (verses 4-5).
If you are born again, you should know and recognize the voice of your Good Shepherd, Jesus, and the voice of a stranger you should not follow.
Learn from one man who was in New York City on 9/11 and discover the faith to hear and obey the Holy Spirit to overcome fear in your life.
Recognizing God’s Voice Could Lead You to Safety
“Run.”
That was the one word God spoke to a man who had just witnessed terrorists attack the World Trade Center in New York City using two airplanes on September 11, 2001.
As a believer and member of a church located within sight of the Twin Towers, his first instinct was to run inside and help people get out of the building — but God gave him different instructions.
God led him to run to the subway tunnel across the street. Just as he descended the 40-foot staircase to get to the subway level underground, he heard the explosion that accompanied the collapse of the first tower. The intense heat made its way below into the tunnel. He later learned that the fire from the blast had incinerated everyone standing in the place he’d been when God told him to run.
He again felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit—this time, to leave the subway tunnel and move away from the area altogether. As he ran, ashes filled the air and everything turned black with soot.
Throughout his supernatural escape, he said he felt like he was in a protected place. His crisp, white dress shirt didn’t have a mark on it—not even from the sky filled with ashes.
Looking back on September 11, 2001, it seems like a terrible dream filled with fear. But for those who were impacted, whether by being in one of the buildings or having loved ones there, it was more than a dream. It was a horrendous experience no one ever wanted to have.
God’s Voice Can Lead Us from Tragedy to Safety
Americans didn’t expect a terrorist attack on their soil, especially not one committed by men who were determined to destroy America. The devastation was unthinkable, the horror unbelievable, and the damage was far-reaching.
Even in the middle of unspeakable destruction, some people were safe.
This man, who ran from the Twin Towers, obeyed God’s voice. He had learned in church how to hear the voice of the Lord, and that’s what he believes saved him that day.
God’s Word contains instructions on how to live a protected life. Deuteronomy 28:1-14 promises you’ll be blessed everywhere you go and in everything you do if you hear and obey His voice.
Follow the instructions in the Word. Instructions about your job, family, and even possible dangerous situations will come to you as you meditate on God’s Word and allow it to take root in your heart. You will have ears to hear and eyes to see God’s will.
Just like the man who escaped death at the Twin Towers, you can escape trouble by running to God for help! You can overcome fear in your life by hearing and obeying.
